History

Loko Ea Fishpond is located in Haleiwa, in the ahupua'a of Kawailoa, and in the moku land district of Waialua.  The "Ea" in Loko Ea has many meanings, inlcuding breath, smell, rising, life, and independence.  The fishpond is a pu'uone one, one of the six different types of fishponds, and is the only pu'uone type on Oahu.  Loko Ea is an ancestral place of importance, is a significant Wahi Pana to people of Waialua, is associated with ancestral deities, cultural practices, historical events, and used to be able provide sustainable food for the community.  The water in the fishpond is made up of brackish water because the rising underground freshwater mixes with salt water from tides.  The fishpond itself is estimated to be about 400 years old.
