Community Work Day

On February 4th, 2017, Mililani AP Environmental Science students led a community work day at Loko Ea Fishpond.

Two projects were done at the workday- restoring the wall and shoveling dirt in the keiki pond to build up its wall.  Restoring the wall involved shoveling out dirt which did many things, like improve the flow of the pond.  Shoveling dirt from the keiki pond helped to increase the amount of water that the pond can be  sustained and so it doesn't leak.

We hope that this workday connected more people with the fishpond, and encourage more people to take care of special places like this one in their communities

At the end of the workday, participants were asked to write a short reflection on a cut out fish about how they felt about the day while keeping in mind HĀ, which they were taught earlier in the day.  These smaller fishes were then collectively put on a bigger fish.

Nā Hopena A‘o, or HĀ is a new state framework that uses the culture of Hawai'i.  It uses the acronym BREATH- belonging, responsibility, excellence, aloha, total well-being, and Hawai'i.
